Tune in to Channel 9’s Getaway over the next three weeks to witness Ian “Dicko” Dickson’s luxury Scenic river cruise along Indochina’s Mekong River on board Scenic Spirit from Cambodia to Vietnam.
Three half hour episodes will air on 19 & 26 August and on 2 September 2017.
Starting at sunrise in Siem Reap, the gateway to Cambodia’s famed Temples of Angkor, Dicko begins his ‘adventure of a lifetime’ with a quick history lesson about the most well-known structure, Angkor Wat, before taking to the jungle to explore the temple of Ta Promh – otherwise known as the Lara Croft Tomb Raider temple – and the Bayon Temple, with its curious carved faces.
Later, Scenic’s exclusive temple dinner is under the spotlight. One of a series of special Scenic Enrich experiences, the dinner features traditional performances alongside a mouth-watering five-course feast, set in one of the stunning temples of Angkor. This episode concludes with an exploration of Siem Reap’s night markets and an introduction to Dicko’s home away from home, Scenic Spirit.
The following episode sees Dicko cruising towards Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh, before crossing over the border into Vietnam. Starting with a rather less luxurious mode of transport than his Scenic ship, Dicko reflects as he participates in a traditional blessing at a Buddhist temple in Oudong. Following time in a local village, he then makes a moving visit to Cambodia’s Killing Fields and a former prison to learn more about the country’s complex history.
Docking in Phnom Penh, Dicko’s in-depth tour of Cambodia continues as he steps back in time at the city’s iconic Raffles hotel for a sumptuous high tea, before re-boarding Scenic Spirit to cross into Vietnam. Heading well off the tourist route, Dicko spends his last few days on Scenic Spirit discovering the ins and outs of everyday life in the quaint villages of the Mekong Delta.
The final episode takes viewers to bustling Ho Chi Minh City for a look at the city’s compelling past, before Dicko journeys to the former royal capital Hue, and on to the charming town of Hoi An to end his stay on a cultural and culinary high. Ho Chi Minh City’s energetic night life will be on full display as Dicko takes to the streets on a vespa tour of the city’s buzzing nightlife and delicious street food, before going underground to explore relics of Vietnam’s most recent conflict, the hidden network of Cu Chi tunnels.
Heading north, Dicko will step back in history at a magnificent garden home in Hue, before tucking into a string of authentic Vietnamese dishes – and learning to make his favourites – during a cooking class in French-influenced Hoi An.
Scenic is also offering one lucky Getaway viewer the opportunity to win a place on an 11 Day Luxury Mekong and Temple Discovery cruise and tour, including return flights – valued at over $17,000. Viewers will also receive a discount of $250 per person off all Mekong cruise and tours departing in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
