11 OCT: Air Canada flight attendants are threatening to strike again. But as before, the Canadian government has indicated it will exercise back-to-work legislation to prevent a shutdown.
An earlier threatened strike was narrowly averted when the flight attendant union reached a last-minute deal with management over pay and conditions.
But union members have failed to ratify the package, with 65% opposing it in a ballot which ended at the weekend.
In an email to media on Sunday night, a government official said: "The government has made it clear that it will step in swiftly with back-to-work legislation to halt any strikes at Air Canada, which it regards as an important engine of economic activity."
"We will be clear that a work stoppage is unacceptable in this time of fragile economy".
