27 OCT: Ft Lauderdale airport in Florida is to get one of the world’s more unusual runways.
Over a distance of nearly 2.5kms, the strip will rise from ground-level to a height of more than 20 metres, ending abruptly, like a cliff.
Vehicles on an interstate highway and trains will flow beneath it at the highest point.
It will be the second main runway at Ft Lauderdale-Hollywood airport, which among other things serves one of America’s busiest cruise ports.
The go-ahead for construction, announced Tuesday, comes after 25 years of wrangling between airport authorities and residents opposed to additional airport activity.
