10 NOV: India’s second-biggest carrier, Kingfisher Airlines, plans to cancel 31 flights daily for the next 12 days, news agency AFP reported on Tuesday.
But it isn’t clear what has prompted the move, though the airline is known to be having financial problems.
A company spokesman is quoted only as telling India’s Mint newspaper that "extreme situations call for extreme measures".
The airline is cancelling 27 domestic flights on key inter-city routes and four flights to Bangkok. That represents 5-7% of the schedule.
Kingfisher, founded by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, announced last month it was axing its low-cost service because it’s getting better revenues from the premium carrier.
The airline hasn’t posted a profit since it was found six years ago and has reportedly been having trouble making payments to oil companies and airports. It delayed salaries to its employees for August and September, AFP reports.
Kingfisher flies to 59 cities in India and eight international destinations with 325 daily departures with a fleet of 66 planes.
