New approval for United-Continental merger

30 AUG: United Airlines and Continental received US Department of Justice approval for their planned merger on Friday, after agreeing to a landing slots deal with Southwest Airlines at the New York area’s Newark airport.

The department said the deal had met concerns about UA-CO dominance at Newark.

Shareholders of the two airlines vote on the merger plan on 17 September.

If they approve it, the deal should be finalised by 1 October.
