9 AUG: New York’s Kennedy airport is experiencing a soaring crime rate, the New York Post reports today.
The paper says there’s been a 30% increase in incidents since the middle of last year, but arrests have been made in only 9% of cases.
The incidents include thefts from baggage carousels, the theft of property left unattended, and theft by baggage handlers and security staff.
Pickpocketing, theft from cars in parking areas and shoplifting aren’t included.
The most frequently-stolen items are laptops and iPads.
The Post says airport authorities are asking airlines to install more cameras in terminals and post guards where thefts have been reported.
