US downgrades Mexico’s aviation safety rating

3 AUG: US aviation authorities have down graded Mexico’s aviation safety rating after deciding that the country no longer meets standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

The downgrade, from Category 1 to Category 2, means Mexican airlines cannot launch new services to the US, but can maintain existing ones.

Mexican carrier Aeromexico immediately pointed out that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) move refers exclusively to the country’s aeronautics authority and does not apply to the level of safety of airlines.

It says Aeromexico complies with the highest international standards of operational safety.

Australian Foreign Affairs, makes no reference to the FAA action in its aviation safety and security bulletin, which was last updated at the end of April.
