Airlifted Pacific Sun passenger cleared of meningococcal disease

1 SEP: Queensland Health says an ill cruise ship passenger who was airlifted to a Gold Coast hospital overnight does not have meningococcal disease.

A rescue helicopter was called to P&O’s Pacific Sun when it was 110km off southeast Queensland last night.

The 51-year-old Sydney man became ill within 24 hours of boarding on Sunday and there was concern he had meningococcal disease, the ABC reports today.

In a statement, P&O says he was treated in the ship’s medical centre and a hospital transfer was arranged.

Preventative medication was given to his travelling partner and anyone who had been in close contact with him.

The man remains in a serious condition in hospital.

The ship will miss its first port of call at Emerald Bay at New Caledonia tomorrow.

It is scheduled to return to Sydney on Monday.
