12 SEP: The parents of a British woman who disappeared from the liner Disney Wonder in March are pressing the UK government to introduce tougher laws to protect British citizens from crimes at sea.
Rebecca Coriam, 24, a youth worker on the ship, disappeared during the night of 22 March as it sailed between Los Angeles and Mexico.
The alarm was raised when she failed to report for the work the following day.
Her disappearance is being investigated by authorities in the Bahamas, where Disney Wonder is registered, but her parents are upset at the time it is taking to determine what happened.
Rebecca’s mother, Ann Coriam, told the MailOnline on Friday: "Our daughter vanished off a ship six months ago and we are still no closer to finding out what happened to her".
Now she and her husband have secured a meeting with UK transport minister Mike Penning to urge introduction of tougher safety-at-sea laws.
"I would like to see British police authorised to carry out a thorough investigation on board a ship if a British citizen vanishes", Mrs Coriam said.
