Panic buttons for New York hotel workers

9 FEB: Hotels in Manhattan will provide employees with panic buttons as part of a new seven-year labour contract. The move comes just nine months after a highly-publicised incident in which former International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strauss-Kahn was accused of sexually assaulting a maid in his Manhattan hotel suite.

But neither union officials nor the owner of the hotel, the Sofitel New York, have linked that matter to the latest development, the New York Times reports.

The contract provision calls for hotels to equip employees with "devices to be carried on their persons at work that they can quickly and easily activate to effectively summon prompt assistance to their location."

The devices, to be available withion one year, will be distributed to housekeepers, room-service waiters and attendants who stock mini-bars.
