English hotel promises a refund if it rains

2 JULY: Unusually dry weather in England has prompted a Lake District luxury hotel to offer guests a refund of £100 (about $160) if it rains during their stay.

The Samling hotel in Windermere has had a rain gauge placed on its roof, and management promises to honour the deal even if there is only light drizzle.

Like much of England, the region has just experienced its driest winter since 1929 and spring has also been rain-free to date.

The Samling is a Michelin-starred property whose guests have included actor Tom Cruise and footballer David Beckham.

Its refund offer applies till the end of September, and bookmakers give it a 50% chance of not having to make a payout.
