Hotel is a real dump

A new hotel in Rome is being classed as a real dump.

Save the Beach Hotel

Save the Beach Hotel

The five-room, two-storey property, which closes today just a few days after it opened, is made entirely of rubbish collected from beaches.

It’s the brainchild of German artist Ha Schult, who calls the Save the Beach Hotel "a mirror of our times".

He says: "We create rubbish and we become rubbish.

"We must change the world before the world changes us".

Material used in the structure includes plastic bags, fishing nets, unwanted clothes, old tyre, discarded toys, rusted hubcaps and old musical instruments.

All of it has been disinfected, so there’s no garbage smell.

The hotel has chemical toilets, but no showers, and sheets have been ripped up to provide curtains.

Guests during the few days the property has been open include Danish fashion model-turned-environmentalist Helena Christensen.

She told media she is "deeply disturbed" at the state of Europe’s beaches and said she had "a great night" at the hotel.
