London Olympics top accommodation selling fast

30 JUN: Aussies heading to London for next year’s Summer Olympics have scant chance of securing top-quality accommodation.

Some of the UK capital’s best hotels are already booked out for the 27 July to 12 August event.

And accommodation at other leading properties is being snapped up by corporations involved in sponsorships, the Evening Standard newspaper reports.

The paper says the Games organising committee has already block-booked 40% of the rooms in central London, including more than half of those at the 5-star Dorchester.

The 200 rooms at Claridges, also 5-star, were snapped up within two weeks of going on sale and the hotel says there’s a "very long waiting list".

The Sheraton Park Tower has only 20 of its 280 rooms left, and only suites are available at The Westbury, at a cost of up to £10,000 (about $14,000) for the two-week period.

The Standard says a number of other leading hotels, including The Savoy, The Ritz, The Corinthia, The Landmark and The Royal Garden. aren’t taking Games bookings until they decide what to charge.
