Unemployed truckie tried to sell London’s Ritz hotel

5 JULY: An unemployed truck driver who tried to sell London’s swanky Ritz Hotel at a bargain price of $400m has been found guilty of obtaining money by deception.

Anthony Lee, an undischarged bankrupt who had no authority to engage in any kind of sale transaction, talked two investors into paying him of a deposit of $1.6m before the intending buyers smelt a rat.

Lee had convinced them that he had the approval of the hotel’s owners to negotiate a sale at a price some $300m below the real value of the property.

A prosecutor told a court last month that the deal was "pure fantasy".

He’s now awaiting sentence, with a judge warning him that he faces a "substantial" time in jail.
