Air Zimbabwe heading for liquidation

24 JAN: Zimbabwe’s troubled national airline looks to be heading for extinction. State media says the carrier has been put under judicial management ahead of its likely liquidation.

The country’s High Court has appointed a executive from a leading accounting firm to take charge, sweeping side all powers of the airline’s board of directors.

The move follows claims by pilots and other employees for unpaid wages and allowances amounting to $35m and dating to January 2009.

Last month the airline, founded in 1964, paid $1.2 million to obtain the release an aircraft impounded over debts in Britain.

It owes $140 million to its creditors and has now grounded all but some domestic flights.

UPGRADE DELAY Air NZ says it’s new 'OneUp' bidding system for upgrades will now apply for travel from 12 July. It was to take effect 30 May.

AIRPORT SACKING A top executive at Berlin’s new airport has been fired after it was announced that the airport will now not open till March next year because of problems with fire safety system. "He had trouble recognising when things were going wrong", Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit told reporters yesterday. The airport was to open next month.
