Anger as Falklands turns away gastric illness liner

18 JAN: Falkland Islands authorities are under fire for allegedly turning away a Princess Cruises liner hit by an outbreak of gastric illness.

Angry tourists on Star Princess told The Associated Press they were forced to cancel shore excursions when officials in the disputed British territory off Argentina refused them entry on Saturday, saying an outbreak on land could strain its medical resources.

About 74 passengers and crew among the more than 3500 people on board were reported ill with so-called norovirus, 20 of them with symptoms like vomiting and diarrhoea.

Falkland authorities have defended their decision as being "in the wider interests of the public and tourism industry".

But the AP report quotes a British infectious diseases expert as saying that the decison was "over the top".

Norman Noah of London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said: "If you’re suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea, you probably won’t be sightseeing.

"Chances are you’ll be staying in your cabin by yourself."
