Emirates cuts Sydney racing sponsorship

23 JAN: The party seems to be over for those in the industry who’ve enjoyed the lavish hospitality of Emirates at Sydney’s autumn racing carnival. The Middle East airline has ended its 10-year association with the event because of uncertainty surrounding redevelopment at Randwick racecourse, the Sunday Telegraph reports.

The paper quotes Emirates Australasia vp Barry Brown as saying: "It’s been a long association, but with no grandstand and no track, we weren’t sure where the event was going to be held.

"We need to plan these things a long way in advance so we decided, for the moment anyway, that we would concentrate on the Melbourne Spring Carnival and Emirates Melbourne Cup."

Emirates held the naming rights for Sydney’s Doncaster Day for four years and before that sponsored Oaks Day in Sydney.
