Fiji details how flooding is affecting tourism operations

25 JAN: Fiji tourism authorities have issued a statement on the flooding on the main island of Viti Levu as heavy rain continues to hit resort areas and disrupt transport services, including island cruises and inter-island air services. Flooding has led to the temporary closure of roads in Nadi, including the road linking the Denarau Island resort area with Nadi airport, says the statement, which was issued last night.

Arriving and departing air travellers are being ferried by boat between Denarau and Naisoso resort near the airport.

Resorts in Denarau and other parts of Fiji say that despite the heavy rain, they’re operating as close to normal as possible.

Reduced ferry services continue to operate between Viti Levu and resorts in the Mamanuca Islands and Yasawa Islands.

But several operators, including Blue Lagoon Cruises and South Sea Cruises, have cancelled services until conditions improve.

Captain Cook Cruises has cancelled its day cruises, but plans to continue operating its four-night cruise program from today and is also operating ferry transfers between the airport/Naisoso and Port Denarau.

While local flights to other islands have been cancelled pending better weather, helicopter charters are being used to ferry visitors between the Coral Coast and Nadi airport due to the closure of Queens Highway on the south-western side of Viti Levu.

Travellers should contact their resort or airline for additional information.

Tourism Fiji says it is continuing to monitor the situation and will issue further advisories as more information becomes available.
