Fired Pacific Blue drug party pilot fails to regain job

19 JAN: A Pacific Blue pilot fired after a boozey, drug-fuelled party at his Christchurch apartment has failed to win back his job. The pilot had invited the crew of a trans-Tasman flight to his apartment after they landed in June 2009.

Early the next day, a female flight attendant, still in her uniform, was admitted to hospital with symptoms of drug or alcohol abuse.

She told authorities the pilot had given her a pill and she had no memory of what happened after that.

Pacific Blue began investigations and suspended the pilot, who’d been the subject of earlier allegations relating to an overnight stop in Sydney.

Some months after the party, he was given a final warning following new allegations, and finally dismissed.

In a bid to win reinstatement, the pilot took the matter to NZ’s Employment Relations Authority, claiming the airline failed to carry out a proper investigation into the party.

But the ERA has decided his dismissal was justified.
