Hobart icon calls in the receivers

19 JAN: Hobart’s iconic Hadleys Hotel has called in receivers ahead of the opening of a multi-million dollar redevelopment, the ABC reports. The hotel is owned by the Doherty group but managed by Accor, which is in talks with the receiver Korda Mentha.

The Doherty Group’s hotels at Ross and at Ballarat in Victoria are also in the hands of the receiver.

Korda Mentha’s David Winterbottom says the Hadley’s inner Collins Street redevelopment ran significantly over budget, placing the owners in financial trouble.

He says that site, which includes luxury apartments and a restaurant, will open but he can not say when.

Luke Martin, from the Tourism Industry Council, says it is bad timing.

"This new product we were really looking forward to because we know Hobart accommodation is performing quite well."

Mr Winterbottom says it will be business as usual at Hadleys, which will be sold off in the coming months.
