Hoteliers say private accommodation hurting tourism

23 JAN: The hotel industry has urged action against illegal accommodation suppliers in the ACT. The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) says private residences let as short-stay accommodation in the ACT are deadly fire traps and are harming an already depressed tourism sector, the Canberra Times reported yesterday.

A spokeswoman for the Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate is quoted as saying that the ACT government is not aware of any "systemic use of residential premises as hotels.

But the paper notes that a search of the internet shows hundreds of homes and units in residential areas across Canberra available for short-term holiday rentals.

The AHA says this type of accommodation poses problems for the disabled and increases the risk of fatal fires.
