New smartphone app bypasses dirty hotel TV remotes

31 JAN: New technology is enabling guests at some 2000 hotels across the USA to use their smartphone, instead of standard remotes, to surf in-room TVs from this week. The free app, created by LodgeNet, the biggest US provider of hotel room television entertainment, also contains information about a particular hotel, local events, attractions and restaurants, national newspaper USA Today reports.

Once the app is downloaded, users see a screen with directions on how to link to a specific hotel TV.

The app can even let guests turn off their TVs from outside their rooms.

LodgeNet expects the free app to be a hit for many reasons, such as being able to avoid handling a dirty remote, USA Today says.

Studies have indicated that a TV remote is one of the dirtiest items in a hotel room.

Also, dealing with a remote with dying batteries will be a hassle of the past.
