New statement on threatened Fiji storm

1 FEB: Fiji’s tourism industry is bracing for another tropical storm and Tourism Fiji has outlined action being taken by various operators. In a statement issued at 4pm local time yesterday, Tourism Fiji said weather forecasters had issued a strong wind warning for the western side of the main island (Viti Levu) and the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands.

Forecasters said the region can expect heavy rain and squally thunderstorms in coming days.

Tourism Fiji says the tourism sector has taken measures to ensure the well-being of all guests, staff and property.

International flights continue as normal, but domestic carriers including Pacific Sun advised that while Nadi-Suva flights continue to operate, some outer island flights may be affected.

A help desk is being established at Nadi International Airport to deal with inquiries.

Island Hopper helicopter services continuing to operate, but Pacific Island Seaplane flights have been temporarily suspended.

On the water, South Sea Cruises/Awesome Adventures operated morning inter-island ferry services to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, however afternoon services and all full-day and half-day cruises in the region have been cancelled.

Captain Cook Cruises day and seven-day sailings are continuing.

Blue Lagoon Cruises cancelled the four-day Yasawa Island cruise scheduled to depart yesterday.

Main roads remain unaffected by the weather, but some roads in Rakiraki in the east of Viti Levu have been closed due to heavy rainfall.

UPGRADE DELAY Air NZ says it’s new 'OneUp' bidding system for upgrades will now apply for travel from 12 July. It was to take effect 30 May.

AIRPORT SACKING A top executive at Berlin’s new airport has been fired after it was announced that the airport will now not open till March next year because of problems with fire safety system. "He had trouble recognising when things were going wrong", Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit told reporters yesterday. The airport was to open next month.
