1 JUN: A religious service was held in the Northern Ireland port of Belfast yesterday to mark the 100th anniversary of the launch of Titanic.
The ill-fated liner slid into the water just after noon on 31 May 1911 at the yard of Harland & Wolff, at that time the biggest shipyard in the world.
It took three years to build Titanic, but just 62 seconds to launch the ship, the BBC reported yesterday.
Just over 10 months later it was at the bottom of the Atlantic with the loss of 1500 lives after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
