14 JUN: America’s long-distance passenger trains are experiencing solid growth, according to figures Amtrak issued Friday.
Despite weather-related disruptions, trains like the Lake Shore Limited (Chicago-New York), the Sunset Limited (Los Angeles-New Orleans), the Silver Star (New York-Miami) and the Southwest Chief (Los Angeles-Chicago) all had double-digit increases in passenger numbers over the first eight months of the network’s current financial year (October to May).
Amtrak said May was the 19th month in a row that it has posted year-on-year increases over the entire network, including its shorter-haul inter-city system.
It carried 2.6 million travellers last month, putting it on track to beat last year’s total annual traffic of 28.7m passengers.
Amtrak operates more than 300 trains a day to 500 cities and towns in 46 states and three Canadian provinces.
