18 MAY: Australian visitors to NZ spent 7% less in the year to March than in the previous 12 months, according to data issued yesterday.
The NZ Ministry of Economic Development said total visitor spending of $NZ5.6 billion during the latest 12 months was down 6% on the previous year’s $NZ6 billion.
This was despite a slight rise in the number of tourists to a record 2.5 million.
Officials said a stronger NZ dollar is seen to have limited how much tourists were willing to spend.
Spending by American visitors was down 14% and by Britons, 18%.
