Big cruise expansion

Carnival Australia has announced massive expansion of trans-Tasman capacity, saying today that its P&O and Princess brands are expected to carry 80,000 passengers to NZ on 38 cruises over the next two years.

That compares with 11 sailings last year and 17 this year, jumping to 31 next year.

"New Zealand is becoming to Australia what Alaska is to America – a very desirable holiday destination ideal to visit by sea," says Carnival ceo Anne Sherry.

A record nine Carnival liners will be based in Australian waters in the 2011-12 summer, including Queen Mary 2 on a circumnavigation of Australia.
