24 MAY: Plans for a major upgrade of Kangaroo Island’s Kingscote airport will be announced today as part of a move to double tourist traffic to the South Australia island, the Adelaide Advertiser newspaper reports.
The paper quote SA premier Mike Rann as saying it’s still relatively difficult and expensive to get the island because of airport limitations.
"Lance Armstrong (cycling legend) could not holiday there because the airport was not big enough for his personal jet", he said.
The paper says a report by the state’s Economic Development Board calls for the council-run airport be leased to a private operator so that the runway can be lengthened and the terminal refurbished.
It says the report also is likely to recommend a review of fares charged for the SeaLink ferry service and construction of a new ferry terminal.
