10 JUN: Christchurch is experiencing an encouraging resurgence in visitor numbers, according to figures issued by airport authorities.
They said that March traffic through the main South Island gateway was down 30% on March last year after the devastating 22 February earthquake.
But traffic in April was down only 10% on the previous corresponding month".
Airport chief executive Jim Boult said a study of disasters in other parts of the world shows that sustainable recovery takes four to six months.
And it’s 12-18 months before a full return to normal traffic levels.
The airport has just opened the first stage of a $NZ237m redevelopment project, including a new check-in hall, lounge and retail areas.
