25 MAY: Earthquake recovery authorities in Christchurch are due to announce today how they plan to demolish the city’s tallest building - the 26-storey Hotel Grand Chancellor.
An assessment by US engineers has already said that demolition of the building could damage the neighbouring, unscathed All Seasons Hotel and other buildings, according to a NZ Herald newspaper report today.
But the Grand Chancellor has to go, because it’s in the centre of a cordoned-off section of the CBD - an area which must be re-opened as soon as possible to provide for general reconstruction.
