3 MAY: Australian Foreign Affairs has issued a general safety warning to travellers in the wake of the killing of Osama bin Laden.
The move follows a global warning by the US government of the increased potential for violence in the wake of the terrorist leader’s death.
"Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, US citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations," the state department said.
Australian embassies and consulates worldwide have been told of the need for security awareness and travellers are being advised to "exercise enhanced vigilance regarding their personal security".
