16 JUN: Domestic air travellers may soon have to produce photo ID before boarding flights, Fairfax newspapers claim today.
They say the move is believed to be part of a recommended major overhaul of airport security.
The overhaul is outlined in a parliamentary joint committee report to be issued today.
The committee apparently has found major failings with systems designed to combat crime in aviation and maritime sectors - including drug-running, money-laundering, fraud, identity theft and high-tech crimes.
Fairfax says the committee also found that e-ticketing is vulnerable to organised crime.
It says the photo ID recommendation will anger airlines because it will cause major delays at boarding gates.
And Qantas has argued against it because the elderly, infants and people who don’t have a driver’s licence might not be able to meet requirements.
