20 JUN: South Korean troops have fired at a Sth Korean passenger jet after mistaking it for a North Korean aircraft.
Soldiers manning a guard post on Gyodong island off the west coast of South Korea fired their K-2 rifles towards the Asiana plane, which was on approach to Seoul’s Incheon airport.
The incident took place about 2km from the tense border with the North, a Korean news agency reported at the weekend.
"When the plane appeared over Jumun island, soldiers mistook it as a North Korean military aircraft and fired", a military official told the agency.
"The firing continued for about 10 minutes, but the plane was too far off the rifles’ range and it did not receive any damage".
An air controller said the Asiana jet, carrying 119 passengers and crew, was following a normal route.
