Female air controllers in discrimination lawsuit

29 JULY: Two female air traffic controllers have taken Air Services Australia to court, alleging sexual discrimination, the ABC reports.

Jacki MacDonald and Kirsty Fletcher alleged in the Victorian Federal Court that they were subjected to harassment and bullying.

Ms MacDonald says she decided to take legal action when management allegedly ignored her complaints.

"I think I have earned the right to be respected in my career," she said.

"As any woman who works in a male-dominated environment knows, it’s hard.

"But in this day and age, in 2010, I think you should be allowed to work freely and your job should be based on performance."

Ms MacDonald says she hopes the legal action will change the hostile culture towards women.

"I did not want any young women at age 18 or 19 to come into this work environment in 2010, or any future years, and have to suffer what I have suffered for 18 years," she said.

"Enough is enough. I want the work culture changed in this workplace."

In a statement, Air Services Australia says it is taking the matter seriously and has sought legal advice.
