8 JUN: Calls for the construction of a third runway at Hong Kong airport have sparked opposition from an unexpected quarter.
Environmentalists say the project would require reclamation of 650 hectares of land from the sea, and that in turn would endanger a colony of rare Chinese white dolphins.
Experts estimate there are some 2500 of the mammals, also known as pink dolphins, in the Pearl River Delta region, the body of water between Macau and Hong Kong.
They say dolphin numbers are already declining and a new runway will remove their habitat entirely.
Airlines are pressing for a third runway, and it’s part of a 20-year-old airport development program currently under consideration.
