5 MAY: The part-owner of a Hilton hotel in China which operated a brothel has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in organised crime
Peng Zhimin was convicted of bribery, prostitution, assault and other offences, the Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The charges related to the discovery last July of a basement brothel in the hotel, which is located in Chongqing, a city of 30 million people.
After the raid, officials forced the hotel to close for a week and the property lost its coveted fifth star.
The find also prompted China to speed up an overhaul of its hotel star rating system.
