11 MAY: London’s House of Commons could become an event venue. A committee of MPs has suggested that older parts of the historic complex be rented out for wedding receptions and corporate events to help cut the cost of taxpayer-funded catering facilities.
Committee chairman Sir Alan Hazlehurst says such a venture could prove hugely profitable, London newspaper The Independent reports.

He says Westminster Hall, one venue within the Commons, could fetch £25,000 (about $35,000) per event.
A company which runs restaurants and cafes in other public buildings has already expressed interest.
But the paper says the proposal might strike opposition from MPs who fear that the building could become a Disney-like tourist attraction.
