12 MAY: Tourism officials in Memphis, Tennessee say major tourist attractions have escaped Mississippi River flooding.
The river level topped 14.58 metres on Tuesday local time - just short of the 14.8 metres experienced during a devastating 1937 flood.
Hundreds of Memphis residents living in low-lying areas were forced from their homes.
But officials expected levees protecting world-famous musical landmarks such as Beale Street and Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion to hold against the rising waters.
But the gaming industry along the Mississippi is taking a hit, with 19 casinos likely to be shut down by the end of the week, putting 13,000 staff temporarily out of work.
