The battered fuselage was rolled out of a hangar in New Jersey for transport on a huge truck to an aviation museum in North Carolina, where it will be put on permanent display.
Pedestrians and motorists alike gawked and took mobile phone photos as the truck, accompanied by a convoy of police and film crews, eased its way through the town of Harrison at the start of the journey.
The US Airways A320 has been in the hangar since crash, which turned the pilot, Chesley Sullenberger, into a national hero.
All 155 occupants of the jet were saved.
