19 MAY: South Africa’s prime tourist attraction, Kruger National Park, is getting more rangers to fight rhino poaching.
Soldiers are now on patrolling the park, but authorities say it isn’t enough.
"The park covers about two million hectares, so it’s hard to patrol the entire area with the available forces", park spokesman William Mabasa told website news24.com
There are already 56 rangers permanently based in the Kruger.
He denied that park officials might be involved in the poaching.
South African National Parks says 138 rhino have been poached in the nation’s state reserves this year, and 82 poachers have been arrested.
