9 MAY: New Zealand looks like losing one of its most popular tourist attractions in the not-too-distant future.
Construction of a new port at the top of the South Island will bring an end to the trip through the Marlborough Sounds currently enjoyed by passengers on ferries linking Wellington and Picton across Cook Strait.
Vessels will instead use the new port southeast of Blenheim, cutting out the Sounds sector entirely.
A report on news website stuff.co.nz says the NZ government is set to announce today a high-level study into the $NZ200m port project, and preliminary work could begin within months.
It has the backing of both passenger and freight transport companies, which say it will reduce journey times between the North and South Islands significantly.
It’s not clear what will happen to existing port facilities at Picton.
