4 MAY: New Yorkers faced tightened security yesterday in the immediate aftermath of the Osama bin Laden announcement.
Police working Sunday midnight shift were ordered to stay on duty for the Monday morning rush hour, conducting extra bag searches in subway stations, among other things.
"There are no specific threats against New York City as of this moment, but we are certainly not taking any chances," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
"Our assumption is that bin Laden’s disciples would like nothing better than to avenge his death by another attack in New York.
"That is our operating premise."
