15 JUN: New York is set to become the very unlikely location of America’s biggest camping ground.
The US government announced yesterday that a former airport in the borough of Brooklyn is going to be developed over the next two years to provide 90 sites for tents and recreational vehicles.
Ultimately, it will have 600 sites, making it what US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar called the largest urban park camping ground in the nation
Floyd Bennett Field, which lies across Jamaica Bay from JFK airport, was New York’s first municipal airport, but is now used only by police helicopters.
The camping ground project is part of President Obama’s ‘Great Outdoors’ initiative, which focuses on conservation and access to parks.
