20 JUN: Visitors to America’s theme park capital, Orlando, are being warned against buying bargain-priced takeaway food from vendors slipping flyers under their hotel room doors.
Police say the vendors are simply trying to obtain credit card information.
The situation was highlighted in January, sparking new Florida legislation outlawing flyer distribution at hotels.
But it’s still happening, according to local media, with one TV journalist claiming he received three flyers during a four-night stay recently at a top hotel.
Each offered pizzas from about $US10, and directed buyers to a 1-800 phone number.
When the journalist asked a hotel worker if he should take advantage of the offer, the worker reportedly warned: "Don’t do it. It’s a big scam. They’re out to steal your credit card information".
