15 JUN: The Queensland government is going to pump an extra $83m into tourism over the next four years in a bid to boost the state’s events sector.
The move was announced in yesterday’s state Budget.
Premier Anna Bligh said Queensland needs to take a lead from NSW and Victoria and be more aggressive in pursuing big events.
"I think it’s time to up the ante", she said. "Queensland has to be in the game".
Tourism is said to be worth $9 billion a year to the state, supporting 220,000 jobs directly an d indirectly.
