9 JUN: The Reserve Bank (RBA) is investigating credit card fees charged by airlines, hotels and cab companies, amid reports of gouging, newspapers report today.
Some papers are suggesting that the RBA may cap the charges, which critics claim are designed more to raise revenue than simply cover the cost of a transaction.
Qantas and Virgin are among those targeted in today’s reports, but they deny profiteering.
Qantas charges from $7.70 per ticket and Virgin from $4.50.
Melbourne’s Herald Sun quotes Qantas saying that it believes it’s approach (to card charges) is "straightforward and transparent".
Virgin says its charges cover administration, anti-fraud systems, GST and merchant fees.
