10 JUN: Australians not interested in rugby are avoiding NZ because they don’t want to clash with Rugby World Cup drunks, according to a story today on NZ Fairfax website stuff.co.nz
Inflated accommodation rates are also a worry.
The story quotes Owen Eagles, md of wholesaler ANZCRO as saying that there seems to be a massive barrier preventing some Aussies from booking NZ holidays because they see the tournament coming up soon.
He said it is possible that people who aren’t into rugby have a false perception that the country will be flooded with "drunk rugby fans on the streets and in the towns and bars".
He said the problem, which he claims is being experienced by other travel companies, is not affecting the winter ski market.
It has been predicted that next year’s September/October tournament will attract 85,000 fans to NZ, but Mr Eagles said it’s "highly possible" that many of those fans might not turn up.
