20 JUN: Plans for an 11.3km tunnel linking two of NZ’s prime tourist areas have taken a hit.
The Southland Conservation Board has voted against the $NZ170m project, which would have cut travel time between Queenstown and Milford Sound to two hours - less than half the usual time.
The board has told the NZ Department of Conservation, which makes the final decision on the project, that the plan doesn’t comply with activities allowed under the Fiordland National Park management plan.
A report says the department is now likely to invite public submissions on the project before making a final decision.
