20 MAY: A cigar box belonging to the captain of the Titanic has been discovered gathering dust in a bedroom cabinet in England, the BBC reports.
It was spotted by an auctioneer when he was invited to value a number of antiques at a house in Merseyside.
Pensioner Hilary Mee said she had no idea the item, which has been lying around her home for 20 years, was connected to the ill-fated vessel.
The walnut humidor carries the distinctive emblem of the White Star Line shipping company and bears the initials of the master of the liner, Edward John Smith.
It’s expected to fetch between £10,000 (about $13,500) and £20,000 (about $27,000) at auction in Liverpool today UK time.
The BBC report on the find doesn’t offer any explanation as to how the box survived the 1912 disaster.
