16 MAY: Tourists are now making greater use of rented bicycles in London than locals.
Figures issued on Friday show that the number of casual hires over the Easter period easily outnumbered subscriber usage.
Subscribers are Londoners who pay a flat £48 (about $67) a year to use the bikes to get around the city.
Tourists, or casuals, pay £1 a day or £5 a week.
Dubbed ‘Boris Bikes’ after London’s bike-mad mayor Boris Johnson, the UK capital’s first rental scheme was launched last July.
Bicycles can be rented from docking stations across central London, the most popular being those around Hyde Park.
